3 Words in the Legal Vows that say Everything - Without Making a Single Promise

                      also on the table.The Legal Vows are not really vows at all. For the simple reason that they don't include any overt promises.

BUT, they are the all-important declaration that each of you makes during your civil (celebrant-led or Registry Office) marriage ceremony. They are the words that create your marriage. Once you have both said them, you are legally married.

Nonetheless, this declaration, sometimes explained at a contractual statement, includes 3 words that say everything without making a single promise.

Take

 The
As in "I, [Full Name] take you [Full Name] ...."

Take is an active verb, an action you initiate. So saying I take you confirms your free and willing consent to the marriage. It also clearly establishes your personal responsibility for your choice.

Lawful

 The
"... to be my lawful ..." confirms that you understand that from then on your partner will be  your legal or legitimate spouse because you were united in a legal marriage. 

Wedded

 The
"Wedded" means married - and "Wedded wife/husband/spouse/partner in marriage" leaves no doubt about the relationship.

But we also use the word wedded in a wider sense, which is also applicable -  joined, connected, united. So it tells the world that you freely unite yourself to your partner for life.
